Landscaping has many different meanings to a lot of different homeowners. People often come out to Perennial Paradise and either suggest they want something simple or something very extreme like some of the past projects in the area that I landscaped. I often laugh when people say I want something that doesn’t require much work. I laugh and say well a rock lawn is a good start. As we talk and as they share their dreams of what they want in their yard, I am usually able to steer them in the direction of a do-able dream. We discuss their yard, sun exposure and what they want to achieve in their yard. My goal is not to sell them a bunch of perennials that have no meaning or strategy to their requests, but rather my goal is to help people understand what they are looking for and what is the final goal that they want to achieve.

We identify what colors they like, as well as the heights and purpose that they want to achieve. Perennial Paradise, as you notice in the pictures, offers many path-like walk ways encircling trees and sitting areas filled with potted perennials tucked neatly together. The black fabric between the flowers is a material I used under rock or mulch applications in a landscaped area. One will notice that the fabric has lines on it representing 12 inch gaps. This allows me to create a scenario similar much to the description the customer is sharing about. We together work on color combinations, leaf texture, and contrast. By the time we are done talking the customer I know exactly what dream they have for their yard. We then begin to select the plants that will help them achieve their goals. It is easy to review magazines and books and say I want this or that. Often times, when this or that is built it is a duplication of the magazine rather than the dream of the homeowner. I strive to discover the heart-throb of the customer and work with them to develop the perfect match for what they want in their landscaping.

Mary's perennial rock garden, Bagley MN

Landscaping is an art, a creation or a result of the homeowners dream for their yard. I often encourage people to start with a mother garden. This mother garden in years to come will with dividing of over grown perennials branch off into other areas of their yard for future gardens. It is always a good ideas when considering landscaping to develop a 5-year plan. Work on one area, and complete one step at a time. As the development of the landscaping unfolds this allows you to change your mind or come up with new ideas. Educating the customer how to care for their perennials will allow them to gain the most cost effective plants for their landscaping needs. With rising costs in almost every area of life, perennials offer a wide variety of color and long life plants for many years to come that will enable landscaping to take on many new faces and shapes.
