If you can dig a hole in your garden most any time of the year up until September 15th is a good time to plant your container grown perennials. Here are some suggestions!
1. Dig a hole that is 2x the size of your perennial.
2. Water it and then let the water soak into the ground.
3. Loosen the pot around the plant, do not pull the plant out of the pot. Gently jiggle the plant out tugging at the base of the plant ever so gently.
4. Immediately, dip the root ball in weak solution of miracle gro.
5. If the root ball is root bound, use a butcher knife to cut the sides about 1/2 inch deep. The roots should look a bit frayed so that they can begin growing into the soil, otherwise it will eventually strangle itself.
6. Inset the plant into the hole at a depth that resembles the pot it came out of. Fill the hole around the plant with soil and every few inches make sure that you tamp the soil to remove any air pockets.
7. The root ball should set below the dirt surface about an inch. This allows water to run towards the plant during a rain and also for holding mulch in.
8. Water well!
9. Lightly sprinkle Osmocote fertilizer (Walmart) in and around the plant.
10. Apply mulch in around the plant to a depth of about 3 inches. Mulch should be applied on the entire garden to control weeds, and maintain cool moisture for your plants growing environment.
10. No nite crawlers!!!!! But if you can hire a neighborhood kid to collects simple plain old small skinny worms, about 50 of them. Sprinkle them in and around your plants. They keep the soil aerated, and well fertilized. In addition they consume mulch and turn the leaves into very good organic soil.
